Marsupial Pets, feline alternatives that help, not harm

OK so you're not a dog person but that doesn't mean you simply must own a cat instead.  Admittedly at the moment there is no real alternative so ensure your cat is sterilised and kept inside from dusk until dawn.  There is however one Australian native animal with the potential to wow cat owners in the future, The Eastern Quoll.
Currently extinct on mainland Australia, this little Australian marsupial is the purrfect choice for a cat owner.  They are about the same size as a cat, they have a similar level of intelligence and affection and they will even use the kitty litter tray.   What they won't do is go feral and pose a problem for other native wildlife.

It is not currently legal to keep any Australian native animal as a pet but there are Eastern Quoll breeders and politicians who are working to provide this real cat replacement.  As for catching mice, anyone who has seen a cat catch a mouse or a bird knows that it's a very cruel and slow death.  There are far more effective and humane ways to control these pests.
